1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 (Hemming’s Muscle Machines)
Prior to October of 2010, breaking into the 9s was a myth… the longest of long shots. One man, Lane Carey, wasn’t buying it. Not only did he think it was possible, he knew he would do it. Instead of altering his prized numbers-matching 1970 Torino Cobra, he found the perfect formula for success by purchasing the lighter 1971 Mustang Mach 1 and swapping its 302 for a complete 429 Super Cobra Jet that he already owned. The 429 was a subtle option for the 1971 Mustang that only savvy buyers knew how to order from the factory, even though it wasn’t mentioned in most of Ford’s literature. With that knowledge, Lane knew the motor would fit. His record-breaking stallion rocked Cecil County Raceway in Rising Sun, Maryland in October, 2010 setting a new series record. He didn’t just tickle the upper 9.9s, he dove deep to a record of 9.83! Lane Carey’s 429 SCJ Mustang is synonymous with words like “historic,” “legendary,” and of course “quick.”
